Yoga Classes Designed for Kids Offer Strength and Focus
As the practice of yoga goes mainstream, an increasing number of yoga studios in Los Angeles are offering classes created just for children. Yoga instructors say the ancient discipline, re-designed with kid-friendly poses performed in an upbeat atmosphere, can boost strength, flexibility, concentration and self-esteem. A few of the six kids sitting on blue mats inside Inner Power Yoga are goofing around. Instructor Jacqui Compton has asked them to stretch, and with a gentle but firm order from Compton, her young students settle down to business. After all, the kids, ages 6 to 10, say they enjoy practicing the ancient exercise form that develops strength, coordination, focus and stress-coping skills.
